Negative Why you should avoid Alibaba

It starts with an order for some smart plugs, which are clearly advertised (in poor English) as being able to monitor energy usage.

But as you can see here, there is no such function on this device.

So I contacted the seller.

4.jpg

Unhelpful. I open a return.

5.jpg

The return was declined because I didn't include a picture of the actual product. A bit strange considering it isn't a dispute on the product itself. Of course, you cannot edit the existing return request, so you have to start over again.

I send the smart plugs back in the original condition, using the pre-paid label that their system provided, which I can see was delivered here:

I also filed a complaint, where I got the most unhelpful message of "report not established".

While waiting for the refund, I'm informed that as I did not request a refund, the money has been unfrozen for the supplier.

This automatically cancelled the return I had open. They had already recieved the goods back by then and should be able to tell this as they provided the label.

Trying to get them to understand that I had already sent the item back was a big hassle.

Warning, this is a long email chain. Remember to read it from the bottom up.

Talking to an inanimate cucumber is easier than this shit.

Eventually I got the refund, which was apparently considered "discretionary".

And this is supposed to be an "Easy Return"? This was everything but easy.

This is amonst all of the spam marketing emails, sometimes twice a day. Emails with dollar prices on when my account it set to pounds, emails telling me I searched for things that I haven't, and emails with a subject that there is a message waiting for me (implying a customer service message about the return, or from the supplier), but it's actually inviting me to click "chat now" to talk with suppliers. Ugh.

Additionally, my complaint/report against the supplier seemed to go nowhere. The supplier also begged me to remove the review (which I just ignored), so they deleted the product page and re-created it with removes my review. Here's the nagging messages:

Alibaba and Shenzhen Miwu Intelligent Technology Co., Ltd. can fuck off.

Once the refund was actually in my hands, I removed all of the personal information from my account and changed the email address to a disposable one.

Even requesting your data to be deleted is a hassle.

My advice? Avoid Alibaba. AliExpress is just as bad.

If you insist on buying from them, be prepared for a difficult returns process, and please use a secondary email to save yourself from the spam.
