Attachments (Explanation, Uploading, Recommended Services, Banned Services)

EXPLANATION

While our forum software has attachment (file upload) functionality built in, we decided early on when creating TFUK that we wanted our site to be secure and stable over many years. This means ensuring that for as long as possible, the founder of TFUK can fund the hosting of TFUK without relying on other sources of funding such as advertising. If attachments were enabled, the storage requirements of the server would increase significantly faster, requiring a more expensive hosting package. By disabling the attachment functionality, we can keep our hosting costs as low as possible, ensuring the sites longevity.

The downside of this approach is that if a file is removed, either by the hosting service or the member, then the link to the attachment/file on TFUK becomes invalid. This is why for important attachments/files, the forum staff may take over hosting of the attachment/file, by downloading it from the source, uploading it to TFUKs hosting, and replacing the link in the post. This will effectively make the attachment/file available permanently. This is a manual process but it will ensure we have full control of our storage costs.

The way we handle attachments/files may change in the future, but we feel this is the best way to handle attachments/files for now.

UPLOADING ATTACHMENTS

To share attachments/files, you will need to use an external service, and then paste the public link to it in your content.

Primarily for files, consider using free software such as 7-Zip to password protect (encrypt) your attachments before uploading them. You should use the password "TFUK", but you can use any password - just remember to include it in your post. Password protecting the files helps to prevent people who have found the direct link to the attachment from being able to use it, without having seen the forum post that it came from.

We have a list of recommended services below, but you can use any service you wish, as long as it is not on the banned list, which is also below.

BANNED SERVICES

We will consider banning a service when it negatively impacts our members experience, such as:
  • Downloads are so throttled that it is painful to watch
  • File sizes are too restricted to make the service useful
  • Frequent periods where the service is unavailable or unstable
  • Inadequate privacy policy or other trustworthiness concerns
  • Other files or software are bundled with downloads
  • The service has compatibility issues and/or is not mobile friendly
  • Too many advertisements, countdowns, or pop-ups
  • You need to register an account to download
Banned services:

There are currently no banned services.

If you post a link which includes a banned service, your link will be automatically removed, but your account will not face any discipline. You will just need to use another service.
